I am so excited to bring you a new piece from my visit to the San Bernard Wildlife Refuge. This image is the left side of a panorama that is available as well on my website. At the San Bernard Wildlife Refuge salt flats, the incoming storm created the most amazing light.

The salt flats are an important part of the Texas Gulf Coast ecosystem. Salt marshes line the landward side of Texas’ inner bays with cordgrass, saltgrass and other plants able to live in brackish water. Marshes act as biological filters where pollutants from freshwater runoff can settle out before reaching the Gulf.

These wetlands are home to native and migratory birds as well as fish, alligator and crustaceans. Historically, the Coastal Marshes were full of otters and muskrats, but they are far less common today.
