I could not believe this was Midland, Texas – home of big skies, oil and Texas desert landscapes. I had no idea an urban oasis lurked right along I-20. The I-20 Wildlife Preserve is stunning. It has every ecosystem imaginable. I thought I was going to Midland to get desert landscape photos and instead I came away with a trove of wetland and forest photos., this one included!

This image was taken in a single shot – I typically composite multiple images, but not this time. I did take some artistic license by removing some radio towers that were in the background. The preserve is directly along Interstate 20, so you do have to deal with the surrounding industry.
The day was stunning but hot for an early summer evening. The hike was easy, as my hikes typically go. This took about an hour to get to. I had my Nikon D810, my AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens and utilized a Think Tank harness to keep my camera at the ready and to distribute the weight for the hike.
I utilized my 3-D processing technique as well as Luninar 4, Topaz Labs, Lightroom and Photoshop to achieve the end result.
